Electrical Engineering is a broad field of engineering which deals with science and technology involving electricity, electronics and electromagnetism, to design, construct, and maintain products, services
and information systems. Electrical engineering is the historical name for what is now called electrical, electronics, and computer engineering.
This branch of engineering covers traditional areas like generation, distribution and transmission of electric power as well as new age applications in electronics ranging from telecommunications to computers ,digital system and micro processors. It is a diverse field which basically deals with mathematics.
Electrical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the study of diverse utilization of electricity and equipments that generate and distribute power. This is divided into heavy current (electrical machinery; generating stations and distributions systems) and light current (telecommunications, radar, computers etc.). It also helps to know from the collection of coal in the steam plant by railway wagon to the production of electricity to the supply of electric power to the customers.
Electrical engineers design and develop electrical systems, research new and innovative designs and systems, supervise and plan manufacturing process of high and electrical systems
There are ample job opportunities open for the young electrical engineers. Talented electrical professional are increasing day by day.
Educational Institutions and Research establishments recruit electrical engineers as faculty and scientists. One can also do research work in this field by joining research labs and institutes.
Aspirants can also opt for Teaching career which is also rewarding. They can join an engineering college/university as a full time or part time lecturer/professor.
Young engineers have chances in the Defense Services also. They can also choose their career into the Defense Services – Indian Army, Indian Air force, Indian Navy.
Some of the specialized fields are-
1. Control System
2. Electric Power System
3. Digital Logic Circuits
4. Power Engineering
5. Circuit Analysis
6. Nanotechnology
7. Computer Systems
8. Electro-Optics
9. Mechatronics
10. Electro Magnetism
Top 10 colleges of electrical engineering:-

Remuneration of electrical engineer depends on experience, practical knowledge, higher qualifications and capabilities. The average salary of electrical engineering graduates in India ranges betweenRs.15, 000 – Rs.35,000per month. Freshers from recognised institutions like IITs,NITS and BITS get more remunaration than others.
Those who have completed M.Tech get more than the bachelor degree holders.
Senior Engineers who have more than 5 years of experience get remuneration between Rs.35,000-80,000 per month.
Job Prospects for electrical engineers are quite good. Electrical engineers are required to develop, design, manufacture, test, evaluate, market, sell and manage electrical and electronics systems.
In India, fresh graduates can find jobs both in public and private sector. Both small and large companies in the private sector and the government sector offer placement for electrical engineers. Electrical engineers can find employment in Electrical equipment and systems manufacturing companies, Power generation and transmission, Telecommunication, Railways, IT industry, Health care equipment manufacturing industry, public sector industries like petroleum, steel and chemical industry, Research and design etc. Electrical engineers also has the opportunity to work in the field of software as electrical engineers has a very good knowledge in mathematics which is basically required for software. So the software companies mainly employ electrical engineers.
In Government departments the candidate can get direct recruitment through advertisement in newspapers. Selection to gazetted posts is through competitive examinations conducted by UPSC.
UPSC conducts an Engineering Service Examinations annually for vacancies in Central Engineering Services and various State Public Service commissions conduct their own competitive Exams for vacancies in State engineering services.
Both public and private sector companies employ skilled and well experienced graduates. Electricity engineers are in demand in the field of- atomic power plants, electricity boards, hydroelectric power plants, thermal power plants, robotics, biomedical electronics, power corporations, production plants, hudro electricity sector, natural gas plants, steel and chemical plants. There are ample job opportunities for electrical engineers(graduates) in food, paper, and pulp, chemical, aircraft and automobile industries.
Those who have completed M.Tech have more choices such as professors in engineering colleges.
For Bachelor Degree Courses :
The basic eligibility criteria for BE/B tech in Electrical engineering is 10+ 2 with high percentage of marks in Science subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics.
To get admission in BE/B tech the aspirant has to give entrance examination conducted both at national and state level (e.g. IITJEE, AIEEE, BITSAT etc.)
Duration of BE/B tech in Electrical Engineering is 4 years.
For Master Degree Courses :
To pursue M tech in Electrical Engineering the candidate must have successfully completed BE/B tech. There are some institutes which offers PG are IITs, NITs and few other engineering colleges in India. To pursue for M.Tech, one has to qualify the GATE entrance exam and then they can be admitted in those institutes where M.Tech course is present for their higher studies.
For Others :
One can also go for Diploma after completion of his/her class 10th. Here the candidate will be recognized with the status of junior engineer.
